The History of Governors Club As Told By Governors Club Realty Expert, Scott Kelley

Scott Kelley, a seasoned REALTOR® with Governors Club Realty, has been an integral part of the Governors Club Community since its inception. His journey into real estate began somewhat unexpectedly. Originally from New York, he moved to North Carolina in 1993 and started working at the Carolina Inn. When the Inn closed for renovations, Scott found a marketing job at Governors Club, which eventually led him to sales and the beginning of his real estate career.

Governors Club emerged through the efforts of the Governors Club Development Corporation (GCDC) and key figures like Truby Proctor, his nephew Kirk Bradley, and Joe Brinn. In the late 1980s, GCDC conceived the idea of creating a planned golf community. Jack Nicklaus, fresh off his 1986 Masters win, was recruited as the golf course designer, enhancing the project's prestige and attracting investment from Proctor and his team.

In August 1988, Chatham County approved the Planned Unit Development, and development commenced immediately. Over the next few years, lots were offered for sale, a premier golf course opened, and the first residents moved in. "Today, Governors Club stands as a testament to visionary planning and dedication," says Scott. "With its spectacular scenery, a Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, and stunning custom homes, it remains the only community of its kind in the Triangle area."

Economic trends have played a crucial role in the development and growth of Governors Club. The Triangle area's robust economy and influx of companies and residents have benefited the community. "The community's gated nature and high-end amenities attract those seeking privacy and exclusivity," Scott notes. Additionally, the lower tax rate in Chatham County helps offset living costs, making it an attractive place for homeowners.

Because Governors Club is a community entirely of custom homes, it has been built out at a rate of anywhere from 20 - 50 homes per year. There are currently nearly 1,000 homes built on the 1,200 lots. The architectural styles have evolved, shifting from traditional brick to contemporary and modern designs. "While styles may have changed, the topography and natural elements have always been well-utilized," Scott explains, "with homes designed to fit hillsides for optimal views."

From the beginning, the community has integrated natural features into its design. The boulders used in landscaping, retaining walls, decorative features, and signage initially posed a significant challenge to development. However, creative solutions transformed these obstacles into defining features of the community.

Over the years, many exciting events and milestones have taken place behind the gates of Governors Club, and Scott has witnessed quite a few of them. One standout moment was meeting Jack Nicklaus in 2015 when he visited with his wife, Barbara. “I had the opportunity to spend time with him during a cocktail reception and dinner. It was an unforgettable experience," Scott recalls. Another notable memory was encountering Michael Jordan around the community. "He has a membership here and even has locker number 23 at the clubhouse. It’s always exciting to see such iconic personalities," Scott shares.

Looking ahead, Scott believes Governors Club is in a strong position for growth. "Significant developments like Chatham Park will be pivotal," he notes. As Chatham Park expands and corporate offices are established, many executives will likely prefer to live near their workplace, making Governors Club an attractive option.  With extensive amenities and its unique status, Governors Club is well-positioned for continued growth and success. Scott envisions a bright future, where Governors Club continues to thrive as a premier community in the Triangle area.
